From Vision to Reality: The Technion Teaching BioEngLab Complex Completes Its First Semester
In August 2025, the Technion inaugurated the Technion Teaching BioEngLab Complex (TTBC) in the Malat Building – an advanced, three‑floor laboratory hub designed to elevate practical education in life sciences and engineering. Established as part of the One Technion vision, the TTBC provides students with a state‑of‑the‑art learning environment integrating cutting‑edge laboratory infrastructure, innovative teaching technologies, and a supportive ecosystem that inspires creativity, hands‑on experimentation, and professional growth. During its pilot semester, the TTBC delivered high‑quality learning experiences across multiple faculties, marking an important step forward in shaping the next generation of scientists and engineers.
A New Era of Practical Education at the Technion
The TTBC was created to serve the evolving educational needs of academic units engaged in life sciences, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, biology and related disciplines. While open to the entire Technion community, the facility currently supports core activities of the Faculties of Biology, Biotechnology and Food Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. This semester, students conducted advanced experiments ranging from genetics and zoology to more than 20 biomedical engineering modules gaining exposure to professional‑grade laboratory equipment, digital systems, and multimedia‑enhanced learning tools.
Led by the Head of the Center, Dr. Orna Atar, the TTBC ensures comprehensive support for academic units, including laboratory infrastructure, equipment maintenance, consumables management, staff training, and ongoing updates to course content. The launch semester served as a successful pilot phase, validating both the operational model and the academic impact of the complex.
Looking Ahead
As the TTBC prepares for the next Semester, expansion plans are already underway. The next phase includes opening the facilities for school visits, community training programs, and the development of new advanced courses that reflect the rapidly growing fields of life sciences and engineering. By providing cutting‑edge resources and a collaborative environment, the TTBC continues to strengthen the Technion’s commitment to high‑quality scientific education and innovation.
